“Salty Blood and Tears”, Ocean Stories 2: Moananui Talanoa

–
Adam Art Gallery, Gate 3, Kelburn Parade, Victoria University of Wellington, Kelburn, Wellington
Professor Albert Refiti

This talanoa discussion addresses the names by which Te Moana Nui a Kiwa has been known and considers alternatives that reflect the vast and interconnected histories and cultures of the region. It follows the 2019 talanoa "Salty Blood and Tears," inspired by Teresia Teaiwa's assertion that ocean salt runs through Pacific peoples' bodies and heritage.

The talanoa will be held within Elisapeta Hinemoa Heta's architectural installation 'Ua Tafa Mai Ata: Matāli'i ki Wainuiātea, which takes the form of a marae ātea (public forum) inspired by the atua Wainuiātea, associated with the ocean. This setting provides context and structure for exploring the expansiveness of Moana Nui a Kiwa.
